Ice-olated - Part II

More photos from Iceland for your viewing pleasure!

For kilometers and kilometers (when in Rome!), sometimes all we would see were fields of bright yellow-green moss.  At one point, I had an urge to run around on it.

Checking out the moss.  It was at least 3-4 inches thick and very springy.

Then this happened...we spent a good ten minutes jumping around on the moss.

Fjaðrárgljúfur Canyon (Yes, that's how it's spelled) was by far my favorite place along Ring Road.  In warmer weather, it is possible to hike, and at times, wade through the canyon.  Because it was cold during our visit, we stuck to the aerial views, which were just amazing.  Our photos definitely do not do this place justice.

We felt really small!

The colors were stunning.  I can't even imagine how this place would look with blue skies!

On the road again...

We passed this beauty back on the Ring Road.  She was very happy when we fed her some carrots.

There were waterfalls everywhere we looked.  Could you imagine living at the base of this fall?  So cool!

As we mentioned in our last post, the weather changed in an instant.  Like the time we got stuck in a thick fog.  Crossing a one-lane bridge no less.  Scary.

Maybe you know Jokulsarlon Glacial Lagoon from two of the James Bond movies.  Maybe not.  Either way, it was really interesting to check out and one of my must-sees on our trip.  The lagoon exists due to a large retreating glacier (damn climate change), and it continues to increase every year.  Large chunks of the glacier continue to break off and float around the lagoon.

Black sand beach and blue chunks of ice.  Rad.

Posing with the ice.

Goodnight moon.

I wonder if the water is cold?

Stephen the explorer overlooking the lagoon.

Ice, ice baby.

Fjallsarlon Glacial Lake isn't as popular as Jokulsarlon, but it is not to be missed.

Days before we headed to Iceland, earthquakes began shaking the country.  This led to a massive volcanic eruption that is still ongoing!  Due to the poisonous gases that the volcano was sending eastward, we decided to only go as far east as the glacial lagoons, and turn back past where we started.

On our way back west, we came across a young French couple hitchhiking their way back to Reykjavik.  Stephen spent his early 20's hitchhiking through Chile and insisted we pick them up.  So we did...and we continued driving through the beauty that is Iceland!

Blue skies, green moss, black lava and white glacier.  Iceland at its best.

Getting a closer look at the glacier.

Rainbow!

Beautiful mountains lining Ring Road.

A farm off of Ring Road.  Such an idyllic setting.

We also spotted these crazy skateboarding hikers.  Maybe they got the idea from Walter Mitty?

Views along Ring Road.

We said goodbye to the hitchhikers and continued our drive west around the island.  More beauty ensued...

Icelandic glacial water is about the purest water you can get...and we were low on drinking water...sooo...we stopped on the side of the road.

From the road, you can't see how much water sprays off of the waterfall.  As I got close, I found out.  It was absolutely freezing water.

Going for it anyway.  I was thirsty!

Success!  Although I was totally soaked, the water was worth it :)

Stay tuned for our final installment from our road trip through Iceland!
