Are You Ready For The Country?

After three amazing weeks on New Zealand's South Island, we made it to the more populated, more commercial North Island.  While not as picturesque or laid-back as the South, the North has its own charm, natural beauty, and fun activities.  We first spent a few days in what became our favorite Kiwi city, Wellington, and then we continued north to Turangi.

The Tongariro River in Turangi is a world renowned spot for fly fishing.  Stephen has always wanted to try fly fishing, and I had never even fished before, so we hired a guide to take us out for the day.  It was an incredible day that left us sore, sunburnt, and with a sense of accomplishment.

Getting our gear in order.

Dressing the part.

We started at a beautiful spot along the river.  There were tons of trout just waiting to be caught.

Fly fishing is super hard and super technical.  It looks so simple, but the technique is key and difficult to master.  Our guide Jason Bethune is an amazing fisherman!  Almost every time he cast his line, he caught a fish!  It was pretty impressive to watch, and we learned a lot from him..."It's all about the drift!"

Waiting for something to bite.

We got one!  Stephen caught his first fish, and Jason took the liberty of cracking its head open (see blood below - gross!). This was the only fish that we didn't throw back that day.  Poor guy.

The poor unfortunate soul.

Hanging up the trophy.

Excited about our first catch, we found a new spot on the river to look for some more trout.

Action shot.

Getting a lesson from Jason.  At times the current was so strong, I had to hold onto Jason and have him pull me out!

The setting and weather couldn't have been more perfect.

With Jason's help, we caught 4 more fish that day!  It was really rewarding to reel them in, but we couldn't bear to kill any more fish so we made sure to let all of them go.  We are such softies.

Catch of the day.

Reeling in a heavy one!

Fishy face

After about 7 hours on the water, we headed to Jason's place so he could clean and fillet our catch for us.  He even cut off some slices sushi-style for us to taste.  So fresh and delicious!

That night we bought some lemons and capers to go with our fish.  What an amazing feeling to eat what you kill.  Not that either of us is planning to take up hunting anytime soon...

Our delicious dinner!

All in all, great day.  We both really enjoyed fly fishing, and it whet my appetite for other types of fishing as well.  I guess we have a new hobby!
